South Africa has the most beautiful coastline and Cape Town is known worldwide for its amazing beaches, so it is no surprise that this is very popular request received by local wedding planners. We have put together a few top tips for planning a beach wedding in South Africa.

Legal Requirements

For a marriage to be recognised under South African law, the marriage officiant needs to sign the register indoors. The marriage officer usually requests that the couple sign this in a separate venue.  This is the perfect opportunity to move towards your venue for pre-drinks, as drinking alcohol on public beaches is not permitted in South Africa.

Whether you are planning for an intimate or large wedding on the beach, a permit is required. Make sure to request this early as it can take some time to process. This permit does not ensure exclusive use of the beach, but it is possible to find more secluded areas on certain beaches. This can all be arranged by your wedding planner.

Costs

An elopement wedding with just the couple themselves can be very cost effective, with a beautiful arch and no need for furniture, sound or too much decor on the beach. For a larger beach wedding, you will need to consider the elements, including the tide, sun and wind. It may be a good idea to considering hiring a tent. It is recommended that the ceremony takes place on the beach and then the guests move into a private home, restaurant or beach wedding venue.

When

If you are having a beach wedding in the Western or Eastern Cape from October to December, then you will need to take into consideration that it may be windy. The less windy months are from January to May, but as with all outdoor weddings, a plan B is always a good idea and most venues will be able to offer you a solution.

KwaZulu-Natal has a very subtropical climate, with mild winters and humid, hot summers. The warm Mozambique current brings warm weather and a warm ocean to enjoy all year round. You will find that this province experiences up to 320 day so sunshine in a year, so planning a beach wedding anywhere along the KZN coast is a great option.

Where

From Plettenberg Bay to Lamberts Bay, the coast of South Africa boasts many amazing options for beach weddings and ceremonies, all depending on the size of your wedding party and your requirements. You will find 5 star establishments, rustic venues and world class restaurants. There is something for everyone.
