Whether you decide to host a relaxed spit braai, a dainty picnic with the gals, a sunset boat cruise with your bridal party or even a fun game drive, we’ve got your back! Technically, your bachelorette, bachelor’s and kitchen tea are all pre-wedding functions, but these are mainly events where the bride and groom-to-be are separate from one another.
The reason most couples decide to host a pre-wedding event is to get their guests together to catch up with each other and maybe even befriend a couple of new individuals. Here are some ideas where the future newlyweds can ‘pre-celebrate’ their celebration!
1. A cozy, traditional South African Spit Braai
If you are planning a destination wedding and most guests are staying close together on nearby properties, search for a venue that can accommodate a relaxed get-together in the area. Some wedding venues and guest houses offer lovely pre-wedding event options. Have some drinks on ice ready and hire a Braai Master to prepare the spit, salads and breads. For an extra addition to entertainment, have some music and games on hand for fun.
2. A fancy urban cocktail event

If you are looking to take a more sophisticated route for your pre-wedding event, opt for something like an urban cocktail event at a rooftop bar. Your guests will get to mingle with each other and you can even add some fun into the evening with a little ‘get to know the couple’ game.
3. A gourmet picnic
Simply find your ideal outdoor spot, whether it be at the beach, next to a dam or even an open field with a stunning view. Take a few blankets and cushions to throw on the ground, chairs for the older crowd to sit on and a whole lot of snacks to give the jaws a break from all the wonderful conversations you’ll be having. Don’t feel like doing it all? Hire a planner to arrange this for you. There are some wonderful companies specialise in gourmet picnic set-ups.
4. A sunset boat cruise
Who doesn’t love the sun setting on the horizon with kilometers’ of ocean stretching as far as your eyes can see? Oh, and did we mention a glass of bubbly in one hand; or both, if that’s how you roll. If you are looking to host your pre-wedding sunset boat cruise in Cape Town, all you need to do is open your Google tab and search “sunset cruise Cape Town” and you’ll have plenty of options and packages to choose from.

5. A game drive
Something different than your ordinary pre-wedding function would be a game drive. Seeing animals that you wouldn’t necessarily see roaming the streets (unless there’s another tiger or lion on the loose). You can even brew up some coffee and pack a basket of breakfast muffins for an early morning game drive, or you can flip the script and pack some bubbly and snacks for a sunset drive. Here in South Africa, we are blessed to have wildlife parks where individuals can witness animals roam freely in their natural habitat.

6. A day on the water
Whether you do a little weekend camping trip near a river or dam, or even decide to drive out to Cape Town or Hout Bay for the day, a fun little excursion would be to hire a few canoes and explore, maybe if you’re lucky, the dolphins will say hi.
7. A spa day for the bridal party
If you are okay with splurging a bit before the wedding, treat yourself and your bridal party to a relaxing day at the spa. Have some snacks and bubbly to still keep the celebration going and enjoy the last few hours of unmarried life with the ones closest to you. This is a great way to calm some of those tense, wedding nerves and to get a great night’s sleep.
